Remote Education Provision

This provision is based on Department for Education guidance: Providing Remote Education: Guidance for Schools (updated August 2024).

At Sarisbury Infant School, we believe children learn best through regular attendance and high-quality face-to-face teaching. Remote education will only be provided when attendance is not possible and pupils are well enough to learn. It is a temporary measure and not an alternative to attending school. During periods of remote education, Tapestry will be the school's primary platform for sharing learning, communicating with families and celebrating children's achievements. Parents and carers are expected to check Tapestry regularly for updates and learning activities. Additionally, some teaching and learning may be delivered through Microsoft Teams. This enables pupils to access learning resources, take part in teacher-led activities, receive feedback and stay connected with their teacher and friends, while continuing their education from home.

Our Remote Education Provision aims are to:

  • Ensure continuity of learning when pupils cannot attend school.
  • Minimise disruption to pupils' education.
  • Provide engaging and age-appropriate learning opportunities.
  • Support children to maintain connections with their teacher and learning.
  • Ensure remote education is accessible, inclusive and safe.
  • Support parents and carers in facilitating learning at home.
  • Maintain effective communication between home and school through Tapestry.

Remote education will only be provided when appropriate and practical and should be proportionate to the length of absence and disruption to learning. Remote education may be considered when:

  • For whole school or class closure when the school is unable to open safely or attendance restrictions are introduced following local or national guidance
  • For individual pupils when they are unable to attend school for a short period but is well enough to learn or absent due to a medical condition where learning can continue from home.

Learning activities will be carefully planned to meet the developmental needs of our children and will focus on maintaining progress in key areas of learning. Provision may include:

  • Pre-recorded teaching videos where appropriate.
  • Daily phonics activities.
  • Reading opportunities and book sharing.
  • Mathematics through number facts and calculations using practical resources at home
  • Practical, creative and play-based activities.
  • Topic and enquiry-based learning.
  • Links to online learning resources through websites and apps.
  • Printed learning packs where required.

We will use Tapestry as the main platform for remote learning. Teachers may:

  • Upload daily or weekly learning activities.
  • Share teaching videos, demonstrations and guidance.
  • Provide learning challenges linked to current curriculum topics.
  • Share story times, phonics activities and reading opportunities.
  • Celebrate children's achievements and engagement.

Parents and carers will be encouraged to:

  • Access activities through Tapestry.
  • Upload photographs, videos or observations of completed learning.
  • Communicate with staff through the platform where appropriate.
  • Share successes and achievements from home learning.

We recognise and understand every family situation is different and we will work flexibly with parents and carers to remove barriers to participation. Where a child is accessing remote education, families will be encouraged to:

  • Establish a consistent daily routine.
  • Support their child in completing learning activities.
  • Encourage daily reading and discussion about books.
  • Access Tapestry regularly.
  • Upload evidence of learning where possible.
  • Contact the school if support is required.

The specific needs of each child will be considered when determining the most effective remote learning provision. Remote education will be adapted where necessary to meet individual needs. We will:

  • Consider reasonable adjustments.
  • Adapt learning activities and resources.
  • Provide personalised support where appropriate.
  • Work closely with families to identify suitable approaches.
  • Liaise with external professionals where necessary.

We will work with families to identify barriers to accessing remote education. Support may include printed resources and alternative formats for learning activities.

Safeguarding remains the school's highest priority. Any safeguarding concerns arising during periods of remote learning will be reported and managed in line with the school's safeguarding procedures.

All remote education activities will:

  • Follow and comply with our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and Online Safety Policy.
  • Use approved school platforms and communication methods.
  • Protect children's personal information and privacy.
  • Adhere to professional standards of conduct at all times.
