Phonics
At Sarisbury Infant School, early reading and writing is taught using synthetic phonics as the main approach. The phonics programme that we follow is Letters and Sounds. This programme enables us to teach phonics in a systematic way.
During a phonics lesson pupils recap previous sounds taught, learn a new sound and how to use their sounds to read and write unknown words through segmenting and blending. In addition to this children are taught high frequency words, words which do not completely follow the rules of phonics.
Children who require extra support in acquiring their sounds will be given this in addition to their daily phonics lesson.
The Letters and Sounds phonics programme is split into 6 progressive phases throughout Early Years and KS1.
Below is an outline of when the 6 phases are taught.
