At Sarisbury we have introduced four characters to support the children with their understanding of these elements of development.

The children and staff are using the characters in a variety of lessons within the curriculum and there is evidence of them on our learning walls too. Assemblies also include these characters where necessary and this gives the children a concrete character to talk about and try out scenarios.

The children have been introduced to Sammy the Social Seal, Molly the Moral Manta Ray, Colin the Cultural Crab and Sally the Spiritual Shrimp. Each class has their own smaller version of these four friends to support the development of these elements.  The PTA have supported us with this initiative by providing the funds to purchase the characters, thank you from us all.

Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to enhance their development and understanding of these important life skills, for example:

• Health and Fitness Week helped us learn about cultural development
• The VOICE Team helped us raise awareness to local charities and make decision about how we do this and who we will support which supports our moral and social development.

Promoting British Values at Sarisbury Infant School

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated in 2014. At Sarisbury Infant School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

• Across our schools we actively promote these values through the work of our curriculum, our whole school assemblies, our class assemblies, the teaching of PSHE, SMSC and the Religious Education curriculum
• We encourage the children to become involved in decision making and we ensure that children are listened to in school e.g. School Council 'The Voice of the Crew'
• We help our pupils to express their views by developing speaking and listening, debate and discussion through our curriculum e.g. Circle Times
• We show our children how perceived injustices can be peacefully challenged through our behaviour policy and our School Charter
• We teach our children the School Charter and help them to distinguish right from wrong by being part of our CREW
• We help children develop an age appropriate understanding of living under the rule of law and how that protects individuals in our society
• As an inclusive school, we actively support our pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self -esteem and self –confidence e.g. through our school ethos of being in part of the CREW
• We discuss all kinds of differences between people and encourage pupils to develop thinking skills e.g. through topics

• We promote and implement a strong anti-bullying culture
• We help our pupils develop an awareness of their own and other cultures and ways of life by celebrating different cultures, beliefs and festivals through a well-balanced collective worship curriculum and class curriculum
• We challenge discriminatory or prejudicial behaviour e.g. pupil survey
• We have developing links with faith organisations and encourage visits and visitors e.g. Open the Book assembly
• We endeavour to prepare our pupils for life as active citizens of diverse modern Britain e.g. engaging and creative curriculum 

We put a special message outside Buckingham Palace from everyone at Sarisbury Infants to pay our respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II. 

The children took part in a special Remembrance assembly to gather for a 2 minutes silence to remember the soldiers who fought for us in the war.
