At Sarisbury, History is taught through cross curricular topics which and sometimes thorough whole school theme weeks and drama workshops. We also use the Hampshire Six Step Enquiry Approach.

As a school we follow the National Curriculum Guidance which specifies:

- pupils develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time.

- pupils learn where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods.

- pupils learn to use a wide vocabulary of everyday historical terms and are taught to ask and answer questions, choosing and using parts of stories and other sources to show that they know and understand key features of events.

- pupils are taught to understand some of the ways in which we find out about the past.

 Pupils are taught about:

- Changes within living memory.

- Events beyond living memory that are nationally or globally significant.

- the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements.

- significant historical events, people and places in our locality.

In Year R children begin to think about the concepts of time and change, thinking mainly about events in their own lives and those of family members. They think about sequencing and make class timelines to plot important events during their lives.

In Year 1 children explore changes within living memory through topics such as  “Toys”. They also compare the lives of significant people from different historical periods, and explore events such as The Gunpowder Plot.

0 - year 1

Year 2 look at significant historical events such as The Great Fire of London and World War One and investigate the local significance of Royal Victoria Country Park.
